[Also in Division B5] In a combined mixing and extruding machine for soap, two parallel shafts 72, Fig. 2, which rotate in the same direction, carry intermeshing screw flights 73 and a series of pairs of mixing paddles 74 so arranged that the longer axis of the paddles of each pair are at right angles, Fig. 3, and the tips 86 of the paddles carry out a wiping action of the barrel 71 and of arcuate paddle surfaces 87. Pairs of paddles are angularly offset from one another, Figs. 9 and 15 (not shown), with preferably an offset of 90‹ between successive pairs occurring at the discharge end of the barrel. Further screw flights (104), Fig. 12 (not shown), may be arranged on the shafts immediately upstream of the extrusion orifice. This orifice is offset with respect to a plane through shafts 72 and in one form, Fig. 10, is defined by the bottom edge of an axially adjustable plug 94 and an inclined apron 99. Otherwise the orifice may comprise a slot (102), Figs. 13, 14 (not shown), in end wall (101), or transverse rectangular nozzles (S or S'); Fig. 15 (not shown). Preferably also, the orifice is offset towards that side of the barrel where paddles 74 have an upwards wiping action. Some of the paddles may advance material towards the discharge orifice by virtue of an offset between the upstream and downstream surfaces (91, 92), Fig. 7 (not shown), of each such paddle. The product may be aerated by the admission of air or other gas, e.g. nitrogen or carbon dioxide. Barrel 71 is provided with a jacket 109, Fig. 2, for the circulation of a heat transfer medium. |
