An exposed, high-contrast photographic silver halide material is treated with a solution of a compound of a metal having an electrode potential greater than silver before the development step. Metals specified are gold, platinum, mercury, ruthenium and palladium and compounds mentioned are potassium bromoaurate, auric chloride, potassium chloroplatinate, platinic chloride, platinum sulphate and platinum pyrophosphate. Development and fixing are effected in the usual way. The processing improves the reproduction of graduated tones, e.g. in pictorial images, by the material.
