Runway visual range (RVR) is often assessed using visibility sensors located adjacent to the runway but some distance from the edge. The invention employs the principles of forward and/or backward light-scattering geometry using the runway light fittings as light sources, enabling RVR to be assessed actually on the runway. The runway lights L1, L2, L3 have photosensors incorporated in them to measure forward scattered light or back scattered light. The large number of sensors on the runway itself gives spatial and temporal information of visibility on the runway which is used to assess RVR along the length of the runway. The runway centre lights or edge lights may be used. |
