A gear shift linkage for a motor vehicle having a transversely mounted engine-gearbox unit comprises a gear-shift lever 1 which operates through a shaft 7, a sliding and turning selector shaft 10 carrying a cranked arm 14 engaging a recess in the hub of a bell-crank 17 fast with a shaft 20 which is slid axially by turning movement of the selector shaft 10 to select one of three striker rods 27, 29, 31 and the bell-crank 17 is rocked about the axis of the shaft 20 by sliding of the selector shaft 10 to actuate the selected striker rod. Springs 32, (35), Fig. 4 (not shown), bias the bell-crank 17 and shaft 20 to the central position shown. A sleeve 16 of plastics material surrounds the end of the arm 14 to reduce noise.
