A movable bolster assembly for a press comprises a bolster body 22 having wheels 24 mounted for rotation and for relative vertical movement on support means (50), Fig. 8 (not shown), a first motor 32 on the body for rotating at least one of the wheels, and a second motor 34 on the body for raising and lowering the wheels and for clamping or unclamping the bolster to the bed of the press. Both motors are operated by compressed air controlled by valves 164, 166 and supplied through flexible hoses 33 with universal joints 126. Alternatively the motors may be electric. The bolster is adapted to run along rails 26, 28 fitted with replaceable wear plates (58), Fig. 7 (not shown), in the press bed 10, and stop blocks (140), Fig. 12 (not shown), co-operate with stops (142) 152 on the press standards 14 to limit the movement of the bolster; stop 152 is removable to facilitate complete withdrawal of the bolster. Motor 32 drives one pair of flanged wheels 24 through gearing 38, 40, cross-shaft 42 and gearing 44, 46. Each wheel 24 is rotatable on an eccentric portion (50), Fig. 8 (not shown), of a stub shaft (52), (54). These shafts are rotatable in unison for raising or lowering the bolster by motor 34, gearing 64, 66, cross-shaft 68 and gearing (70), (72), Fig. 4 (not shown). The front and rear pairs of stub shafts are interconnected by crank arms 78, 84 and inner and outer linkages 82, 100. Actuation of the outer linkages 100 causes wedge blocks (104), (106), Fig. 14 (not shown), to clamp the bolster in its correct position in the press, which position is determined by locating pins (121) also actuated by the linkages. Limit switches (156), (158), Figs. 12, 16 (not shown), are used to indicate that the bolster is in its correct position in the press and is properly seated on the bed. These switches may be used for automatic operation of the press.</p> |
