In the dyeing of a long length of carpet material, the material is passed through a padder 1, a dye-setting chamber 3, and rinsers 16-17. Tufted material then passes directly to a dryer 20 whereas needled felt material passes to dryer 20 via a partial dryer 18 and finishing treatment padder 26. At the intake of chamber 3, the material passes over a heated roller 8 and is sprayed with steam from a perforated pipe 12, a mixture of air and -steam being withdrawn through a suction box 9. The material then passes over a suction sieve drum 4 and rollers 6, forming loops while being subjected to saturated steam generated in a sump 14, and passes out through a water seal 13. The material then passes in succession around two suction sieve drums, each being in a wash bowl 16 and followed by a pair of squeeze rollers 17. In dryer 18, needled felt material passes around one or more (two. as shown) suction sieve drums 4 before passing to the padder 26 and dryer 20 in which it passes clockwise (as shown) round a large suction sieve drum 4 and then over conveyor rollers 20. Tufted material passes anticlockwise over drum 4 and then over conveyor rollers 25. The single drum 4 may be replaced by a plurality of smaller drum in series, each drum being rotatable in either direction and having a baffle which may be rotated through 180‹.
