The method involves using an electromagnetic acoustic transducer that is operated as a runtime-controlled group radiator and/or runtime-controlled group receiver. A guided one or two dimensional wave in the electrically conductive body is generated or detected by the electromagnetic acoustic transducer. Frequency and wavelength of an ultrasonic wave to be produced is determined for testing the body. The electromagnetic acoustic transducer is provided with two generator coils and two receiver coils. One of the generator coils is arranged behind the other generator coil in a testing direction. An independent claim is also included for a device for testing an electrically conductive body, comprising a testing head.
