An escape apparatus 10 for a window of a building includes a container 24 for attachment to an internal wall 14 below the window. The container 24 has a deployment device 32 with a ladder 30 attached thereto. The ladder 30 is movable relative to the container 24 between a stowed position where it is folded within the container 24 and a deployed position where is unfolded outside of the container 24. The deployment device 32 comprises a lift mechanism 36 for lifting the folded ladder 30 out of the container 24 prior to the folded ladder 30 being movable to the deployed position. In a second aspect, an escape apparatus includes inner and outer nested frames, where the inner frame 20 holds a window and is pivoted to provide a shield above the opening.
