A cross-linked alternating copolymer of an α,#-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride and a vinyl or vinylidene monomer which has been cross-linked with up to 20% of its wt. by an organic ester or ether containing a vinyl or vinylidene group and, an alcoholic hydroxyl and/or ethynyl group is claimed. In examples (1) maleic anhydride, methyl vinyl ether and hydroethyl methacrylate are polymerized with lauroyl peroxide and toluene, and the copolymer is dissolved in water and treated with NaOH; (2) as (1) followed by heating the copolymer in toluene with boron trifluoride etherate to produce further cross-linking; (3) maleic anhydride ethyl vinyl ether and hydroxyethyl acrylate are polymerized with azobisisobutyronitrile and toluene, and the copolymer is dissolved in methylated spirits and treated with NaOH to produce the partial sodium salt; (4) maleic anhydride, hydroxyalkyl methacrylate and lauroyl peroxide are dissolved in isobutyl vinyl ether and polymerized; (5) as (3) using styrene in place of the vinyl ether and benzene as solvent; (6) maleic anhydride, hydroxypropyl methacrylate and methyl vinyl ether are polymerized with lauroyl peroxide and toluene; (7) as (6) using propylene glycol mono-allyl ether in place of the methacrylate and benzene as solvent; (8) maleic anhydride, methyl vinyl ether and propargyl acrylate are polymerized with lauroyl peroxide; (9) as (8) using ethyl vinyl ether in place of the above ether and toluene as solvent; (10) maleic anhydride, vinyl acetate and hydroxyethyl methacrylate are polymerized in dichloroethane with lauroyl peroxide: and (11) maleic anhydride, hydroxyethyl methacrylate and propylene are polymerized with benzene and azobisbutyronitrile. |
