[Also in Division H2] A method of assembling a dynamo-electric machine comprises locating a rotor 2 in a stator 3, arranging stirrup members 6 so that opposite end portions thereof extend adjacent to the external surfaces of two bearings 5 on the rotor shaft 1 and an intermediate portion thereof extends adjacent an external surface of the stator 3, securing the intermediate portion to the stator and applying clamping rings 8 to the end portions to secure the bearings. When the bearings 5 are located on the shaft 1, a solid or liquid film, preferably a lubricant, of a thickness equal to the required bearing clearance is used. The film is not able to leave the gap owing to the use of high-velocity forming methods which may be magnetic, electrohydraulic or explosive. Ball, sleeve, or flatended spherical bearings may be used and the sleeve bearings may be of sintered metal. The rotor is centred relative to the stator by means of needle air-gap gauges, which comprise probes inserted between the rotor and stator. The stirrups, of which there may be two or more, are of sheet metal or plastics and may be both plastically and elastically deformed during forming. |
