A rotary-piston I.C. engine of the trochoidal n and n + 1 lobe type comprises a gear-pump 10 lodged in an annular space 11 (Fig. 1) on one or both sides of the piston 3 to remove lubricating oil trapped by a sealing ring 8 in each end face or wall 7 of the piston, or to remove said oil and cooling oil from the interior of the piston through passages (not shown) in wall 7, the oil being discharged by the pump through bores 23, 24, 25 in an eccentric 1 and a shaft 2 carrying the piston. Each pump is attached to the side of the eccentric by screws 14 (Fig. 2) and comprises two inlet ports 21, 21a in register with pumping gears 15, 16 respectively, a common outlet bore 22 being in communication with bore 23. Gear 15 in each pump is driven by a gear 17 meshing with a stationary gear 18 which may form a part of gearing for controlling the planetary motion of the piston. If a single pump is provided, spaces 11 on either side of the piston are connected to one another by a plurality of pipes 26 which are skewed relative to the axis of rotation of the piston in the direction of rotation to form scoops and facilitate the flow of oil towards the pump. |
