PURPOSE: A composition containing a Rhus verniciflua Stokes extract for preventing and treating inflammatory diseases is provided to suppress NO and ROS generation and to suppress iNOS expression without side effects. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating inflammatory diseases contains a Rhus verniciflua Stokes extract or a fraction thereof as an active ingredient. The extract is an ethanol extract. The fraction is prepared using diethyl ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, or butanol. A health functional food for preventing and treating inflammatory diseases contains the Rhus verniciflua Stokes extract or a fraction as an active ingredient.
