1,166,014. Benzene. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP. 16 April, 1968 [5 May, 1967], No. 17836/68. Heading C5E. Benzene is produced by hydrodealkylating toluene, a xylene or ethylbenzene in a process comprising:- (a) passing the feed with hydrogen through a first heated reaction zone in which it attains a reaction initiating temperature of 1150- 1300‹ F.; (b) passing the mixture through a second heated reaction zone having a heat flux of 180-280 B.T.U./1b. mole/sec. applied thereto, the residence time being 2-1 seconds and the temperature of the mixture increasing to 1325-1425‹ F., and quenching the mixture with hydrogen to 1250-1350‹ F.; (c) passing the mixture through a third heated reaction zone having a heat flux of 250-350 B.T.U./1b. mole/sec., the residence time being 3À5-5À0 seconds, and the temperature being maintained at 1250-1425‹ F. by quenching with hydrogen; and (d) cooling the resulting mixture, and recovering benzene therefrom. The feed may contain recycled biphenyls, and the product may be clay treated before final fractionation.
