The present invention provides: a method for treating muscular atrophy; and a method and a means both for promoting muscle hypertrophy. Specifically, the present invention provides a method for screening for a substance or factor capable of promoting muscle hypertrophy, comprising: (a) a step of measuring the concentration of superoxide and/or peroxynitrous acid and/or calcium in a muscle cell collected from an animal which has been received a treatment with a substance or factor to be tested; and (b) a step of identifying the tested substance or factor as a candidate for a substance or factor capable of promoting muscle hypertrophy on the basis of the results obtained in step (a).
