The device (2) has a pilot signal terminal (2a) which receives a pulse width modulated pilot signal (8) from a power grid device. The vehicle electrical system terminals (7a,7c) coupled with pilot signal terminal, control the pulse width of the pilot signal so as to determine function of the controlled pulse width of pilot signal. The voltage pulses of the pilot signal are accumulated to an activation voltage. The activation signal is generated from the vehicle power supply voltage based on comparison result of activation voltage and threshold value. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) vehicle charging system; and (2) method for activating vehicle charging system.
