The illumination device (2) has semiconductor radiation sources (8,10) for emitting electromagnetic radiation and for generating partial radiation distribution which is superimposed to generate total radiation distribution. The temperature of radiation sources is determined and a driving current of radiation sources is reduced, when the detected temperature exceeds specific temperature. The safety-relevant portion of total light distribution is represented by partial light distribution and the operating currents (I8,I10) of radiation sources are reduced.
