The device (20) has a control unit (26) generating a switching off signal for switching off a lamp (15) of a lamp group (14). The signal comprises a time course such that lighting power of the lamp is reduced in a switching time. The switching time is determined by the control unit or defined by predetermined switch-off distance of another switching time given in the control unit such that the former switching time occurs when a brightness value is reached. The lamp and another lamp (13) of another lamp group (12) are supplied with electric power by a common illumination conduit (21). An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a group of lamps.
