The method involves arranging a particulate filter (12) in a line element (14) of an exhaust section. The exhaust section flows through exhaust gas flow from a particulate filter, where the exhaust gas flow is transported with a soot mass total flow. A soot mass partial flow is applied, which is provided as a predetermined proportion of the soot mass total flow. A measuring variable and a time period are detected, where the measuring variable reaches a predetermined threshold value. Another time period is determined for achieving the threshold value. The both time periods are compared to evaluate functionality of a particulate filter.
