Smokeless coal briquette is formed from a mass of finely divided coal particles, which has been subjected to heat treatment, the particles of the outer layer of the briquette being mutually bonded by means of a plastic. The formed, heat treated briquette are pref. impregnated by means of an aqueous plastics emulsion, pref. with a particle size of 0.5-2 mu. The briquettes may be immersed in, or sponged with the emulsion. They are pref. pretreated with an aqueous soln. of a hydroscopic salt. The emulsion pref. contains a (co)polymer of vinyl ether, acetate, vinyl propionate or acrylate. Reduces risk of surface flaking. The briquettes are more resistant to friction, and pleasant to handle. |
