The invention relates to a method for applying a bearing layer onto a plain bearing component and to a plain bearing component. A plain bearing material body made of a plain bearing material is arranged on a base surface of the plain bearing component and rigidly connected to said component. An electrode is placed on the plain bearing material body so as to contact same after the plain bearing material body is applied onto the base surface of the plain bearing component, and a current is conducted through the electrode, the plain bearing material body, and the plain bearing component. Said current heats the plain bearing material body and the plain bearing component in a conductive manner, whereby a mixed region of the materials of the plain bearing body and the plain bearing component is produced in the boundary region between the plain bearing material body and the plain bearing component. The electrode and the plain bearing component are moved relative to each other during the conductive heating process, and the plain bearing material body deforms on the base surface so as to spread out.
