An atomiser nozzle comprises passages for gas and liquid arranged to discharge through a common aperture and arranged concentrically with an axis of the nozzle and with each other so that there is a gas passage on the inside 1 and on the outside 3 of a passage 2 for the liquid, the other walls of the liquid and outer gas passages having terminal portions 10, 11, 12 converging on the nozzle axis so that a film of liquid produced by interaction of gas from the inner passage with liquid from the liquid passage is moved towards the nozzle aperture and is broken up before reaching the aperture by a cross-current of gas directed at the film from the outer gas passage, there being a conical surface concentric 13, 14 with the nozzle axis extending from the outer wall at the outlet of the liquid passage and of the outer gas passage towards the nozzle aperture, such surface being a frustum of a theoretical cone having a base at the nozzle aperture and an apex surrounded by the inner gas passage, the axial distance between the outlet of the outer gas passage and the nozzle aperture exceeding the diameter of the nozzle aperture, and means for producing swirling movements in opposite directions in the outer gas passage and the liquid passage. Swirling may be produced by tangential inlets 8, 9 to the outer gas and liquid passages, said passages preferably having terminal portions of cross sections which decrease steadily towards the nozzle aperture.</p> |
