The method involves evaluating the occurrence of a damage event in or on the vehicle body depending on the sensor data transmitted to a control unit (4) by a sensor device (3), and generating a declaration on occurrence of the damage event that is stored by the control unit. The time assigned to the damage event is detected together with the sensor data. The declaration of damage is displayed to the user of the motor vehicle (1) or transmitted to an external receiving device (8) by a transmitting device (7) that is in communicative connection with the control unit.
