<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the degree of appeal to a customer concerning merchandise, and to increase the effects of sales promotion by, when the face or hand of a customer approaches an electronic shelf label terminal, sensing its approach by detection means such as a sensor, and changing the display content of the display screen of the electronic shelf label terminal, or displaying additional information. <P>SOLUTION: The electronic shelf label system includes: an electronic shelf label management server having the sales information of each merchandise; an electronic shelf label terminal arranged for each merchandise displayed in a store for receiving the sales information from the electronic shelf label management server, and for displaying the sales information on a display screen; and detection means arranged at the electronic shelf label terminal for sensing the approach of the face or hand of a customer.
