<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide modified lignin obtained by a simple manufacturing method of only heating a raw material for a short time without using a solvent and capable of improving the mechanical strength or water resistance of a molded product without deteriorating the moldability and having reactivity when used as a component of the phenolic resin molding material. <P>SOLUTION: The modified lignin has a benzoxazine ring in a molecule, where the lignin preferably is derived from a plant or tree, and is obtained, for example, by the reaction of lignin, amine with aldehyde.
