Provided is an organic electroluminescent element (organic EL element) which has improved luminous efficiency and a simple configuration, while ensuring sufficient driving stability. This organic electroluminescent element comprises a light emitting layer between a positive electrode and a negative electrode that are arranged on a substrate. The light emitting layer contains a phosphorescent dopant, while containing a carbazole compound represented by formula (1) as a host material. In formula (1), E represents an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom, and each of R1-R6 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, or an aromatic group represented by formula (2). In formula (2), X represents a CR9 group or a nitrogen atom. |
