[Also in Division C3] Substrates, especially cellulosic materials, e.g. paper cotton, are coated with a composition comprising (a) latex formed by emulsion polymerisation of (1) 10-30% by weight of an aliphatic conjugated diene, preferably butadiene, (2) 89-60% by weight of a copolymerisable (a) monovinyl aromatic compound, preferably styrene or (b) mixture of monovinyl aromatic compound and up to 40% by weight of a C 1-3 alkyl acrylate, a C 1-3 alkyl methacrylate and/or vinylidene chloride or (c) a mixture of monovinyl aromatic compound with up to 30% by weight of acrylonitrile and (3) 1-10% by weight of an N-C 1-4 alkyl acrylamide, preferably N-methylolacrylamide, or acrylamide precursor thereof, and (b) a normally liquid volatile organic azeotrope-forming film coalescing agent, preferably butoxy ethylene glycol acetate, butoxy diethylene glycol acetate, ethylene glycol diacetate or 2-ethylhexyl acetate. |
