A method for producing a honeycomb structure having honeycomb units, said honeycomb units containing silicoalumina phosphate salt particles and being provided with a number of cells, each cell extending along the longitudinal direction from a first end face to a second end face, partitioned with cell walls. This method comprises: a step for preparing multiple honeycomb molded articles; a step for baking each of the honeycomb molded articles to form honeycomb units having at least one bonding surface on which a paste for adhesive layer is to be provided in the subsequent step; a step for impregnating each of the honeycomb units as a whole with water, the amount of the water impregnated being within a range of 15-25wt% relative to the weight of the honeycomb unit in a dry state; a step for preparing the paste for adhesive layer, said paste containing at least inorganic particles, a binder and water; a step for applying the paste for adhesive layer to the bonding surface of the honeycomb units and bonding the honeycomb units to each other; and a step for drying, degreasing and solidifying the paste for adhesive layer to give an adhesive layer.
