Artificial seaweed consists of a multiplicity of elongated flexible elements of thermoplastic material, which are lighter than water, fastened to anchoring elements, and are connected together by threads of a material disintegrating in water. The elongated elements of the artificial seaweed assume a vertical position in water, so that flow of water is reduced, and deposition of sand and other solids is facilitated. The artificial seaweed thus assists in the prevention of coastal erosion, the formation of protective sand banks. The elongated elements suitably consist of a polyolefin, esp. polypropylene. The elongated elements are placed in position while connected together by a material which subsequently disintegrates in water, such as polyvinyl alcohol. |
