<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanical seal of a water pump that reliably prevents a substance from adhering to the surface of a seal material. <P>SOLUTION: In the mechanical seal 2 of the water pump 1, a rotary ring 10 on the rotary side rotated integrally with a rotary shaft 5, and a fixed ring 11 on the fixed side slide to sperate a liquid portion W from a gas portion A in a sliding surface portion between the rotary ring 10 and the fixed ring 11.
