A germicidal detergent composition comprises iodine and a water-soluble amphoteric surfactant which is a mixture of compounds of the formula <FORM:1120230/C4-C5/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3 are alkyl groups containing a total of 7-24 carbon atoms, R4 is a hydrogen atom or a C1-C4 alkyl group, m is an integer and X is a hydrogen atom or an alkali metal, the mixture containing an average of 6-100 <FORM:1120230/C4-C5/2> groups per molecule. The composition may also contain phosphoric acid, one or more anionic or non-ionic surfactants, and an alcohol as clarifying agent.
