<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydroelectric generator with simple configuration, which can be easily installed irrespective of the shape and height of a drop installed, and can flexibly respond to a change in installation environment, and to provide an installation method thereof. <P>SOLUTION: The hydroelectric generator has a generator body 11 which includes: an intake barrel 22 in which water passes from the top to bottom; a water throttling part 32 provided coaxially under the intake barrel 22; a rotary screw 38 provided under the water throttling part 32; and a dynamo 60 connected to the rotary screw 38. The hydroelectric generator includes: a frame body 20 for holding the generator body 11; and a beam member 16 to which the frame body 20 is fixed. The generator body 11 is fixed to a drop 14 of a waterway 12 in a suspended state by the beam member 16. The hydroelectric generator includes a penstock 42 on the downstream side of the rotary screw 38. The penstock 42 expands and contracts coaxially with the rotary screw 38.
