<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pattern identification device capable of improving identification performance and accelerating training processing and identification processing. <P>SOLUTION: In a pattern identification device 20, an orthogonalization gradient vector calculation section 150 generates an orthonormalization matrix from a base vector. A coupling coefficient determination section 200 obtains a coupling coefficient β from a training sample and the base vector. The orthogonalization gradient vector calculation section 150 calculates a coupling coefficient d and a coupling coefficient r from the training sample, the base vector and the coupling coefficient β, and calculates a coupling coefficient r^ from the training sample, the base vector, the coupling coefficient r and the orthonormalization matrix. A new base vector determination section 350 obtains a new base vector from the training sample, the coupling coefficient d and the coupling coefficient r^, and adds the new base vector to the base vector.
