A flame desurfacing apparatus has a wide continuous slot 11 for delivering a sheet of oxidizing gas, and defined by upper and lower surfaces 8, 9 which converge towards the discharge end 10 at an angle of not more than 5 degrees. The surfaces 8, 9 are provided on upper and lower preheat blocks 2, 3 secured to a head 1 carrying a shoe 4; all these parts are water cooled. Behind slot 11 is an expansion chamber 13 supplied with oxygen through orifices 14. Orifices 6, 7 are supplied with fuel gas and/or premixed oxygen. The fuel gas may be acetylene, natural gas, methane, or propane coke oven gas. The ends of the chamber and slot are closed by plates 19 let into grooves in the end faces of the head and blocks. A number of units such as A may be secured togethersideby-side, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), to provide a wide continuous scarfing apparatus. Power may be used for the desurfacing.
