1,242,768. Thickened coal tar composition. ARMOUR INDUSTRIAL CHEMICAL CO. 16 May, 1969 [20 May, 1968], No. 24981/69. Heading C3N. A thickened thioxotropic coal tar composition comprises coal tar oil and 0À1-10% preferably 0À5-2À5% by weight of a monomeric disubstituted urea formed in situ by the reaction of an N-sec-alkyl primary amine, wherein the alkyl group contains 6-22 carbon atoms, and an aromatic or aliphatic diisocyanate having 6-22 carbon atoms, the mol. ratio of amine to isocyanate being from 2 : 1 to 2À8 : 1. Preferred amines employed have the general formula wherein the sum of x and y is 3-19, whilst toluene diisocyanate is a particularly preferred diisocyanate. The coal tar oil preferably has a boiling point up to about 350‹ C., e.g. light oil, middle oil fractions and heavy oil fractions. Purer distillation fractions such as light oil benzene, toluene, solvent naphtha from the light oil; phenol, naphthalene, pyridine, coumarone resin and quinidines from the middle oil ; and also anthracene, phenanthrene, carbazole from the anthracene oil. |
