1,174,322. Production of saccharides. KYOWA HAKKO KOGYO CO. Ltd. 3 July, 1967 [4 July, 1966], No. 30552/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] A process for producing saccharides by fermentation comprises culturing a microorganism capable of assimilating hydrocarbons and of producing saccharides under aerobic conditions in an aqueous nutrient medium containing at least one hydrocarbon as the main carbon source in the presence of at least one organic surfactant. Optionally at least one antibiotic may also be present. Examples prepare a saccharide mixture containing trehalose, glucose and mannose-arabinose polymer, a mixture of glucose, fructose, ribose, arabinose and trehalose and a white sugar polymer containing mannose, arabinose and amino sugars. Specified micro-organisms are Arthrobacter paraffineus ATC 15591, Brevibacterium ketoglutamicum ATC 15588 and Corynebacterium hydrocarboclastus ATC 15592. After the completion of the fermentation, the fermentation liquor is filtered and passed through a cation exchange resin to remove any amino acids simultaneously produced and also cations. The effluent is then passed through an anion exchange resin to remove organic acids and acidic substances. The saccharides are obtained from the effluent by standard methods.
