A surgical stapler comprising: a first jaw having a staple cartridge and a second jaw including an anvil, at least one of the first jaw and the second jaw defining a tissue contacting surface defining a tissue contacting plane and a recess formed into the tissue contacting surface, at least one of the first jaw and the second jaw including at least one projection; and a staple line buttress material releasably disposed within the recess of the tissue contacting surface, the staple line buttress material defining a recess therein for receiving the at least one projection.
