[Also in Division C3] Di-esters of tetracarboxylic acids (or mono- or di-anhydrides thereof) are prepared by reacting ¢ mol. of the carboxylic acid or anhydride with 1 mol. of an olefinically unsaturated compound. The carboxylic compound is selected from pyromellitic dianhydride or acid, mono-anhydride of naphthalene-tetra carboxylic acid, benzophenone - tetracarboxylic acid, mono - anhydride of diphenyl - methanetetracarboxylic acid, mono-anhydride of propane - tetracarboxylic acid, dianhydride of thio - bisphthalic acid, and dianhydride of cyclohexane - tetracarboxylic acid. The unsaturated hydroxy compound is selected from hydroxypropyl methacrylate or acrylate, hydroxy ethyl methacrylate or acrylate, allyl alcohol, other hydroxyalkyl (meth)-acrylates containing up to 15 C atoms in the alkyl moiety, and compounds of the formulµ In Example 4, ¢ mol. of the unsaturated hydroxy compound is replaced by ¢ mol. of n-butanol.
