[Also in Divisions B2, C3, D1 and H1] Fabrics, the surfaces of which have been modified by exposure to an ionized gaseous atmosphere in an electric discharge, are treated with a resorcinol-formaldehyde/latex composition in the absence of an isocyanate primer and are then laminated to layers of rubber. The fabric may be exposed to an ionizing discharge using an electron beam, corona discharge, arc, microwave, hot wire, positive column or electrodeless technique. The gaseous medium may be of nitrogen, oxygen, air, H 2 O, NH 3 , CF 3 COOH, argon, helium, sulphur dioxide, chlorine, hydrogen, NO 2 , formaldehyde, methanol, ethylene diamine, methylamine, ethyl acrylate, styrene, acrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride or dicyclopentadiene. The fabric may be subjected to two or more successive ionizing discharges using different gaseous media. Glow discharge may be carried out with the pressure at 0À1-10 mm. mercury, the voltage being 200-1000 volts, the frequency 3-10 Kc. and the current density less than 10 milliamps per square inch down to 0À5 milliamps per square inch, at -50‹ C. to a temperature below the point where the fabric is damaged, for a fraction of a second to 10 minutes. The latex may be a vinylpyridine - butadiene - styrene terpolymer alone or in admixture with a styrene-butadiene rubber latex. The fabric may be made from a homopolymer or copolymer of a perfluorocarbon, vinyl fluoride, chloride or acetate, vinylidene fluoride or chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene-1, polyethylene terephthalate, polyamide, acrylonitrile, polyurethane, cellulose acetate, regenerated cellulose, wool or glass. The rubber to which the treated fabrics are laminated may be natural rubber or a butadiene-styrene, butadiene-acrylonitrile or neoprene rubber. The treated fabrics are used in the production of tyres.</p>
