<p>An apparatus and method of processing video frames to generate compressed video frames, comprising attenuating luminance components of pixels contained in an attenuation region of the video frames by applying attenuation coefficients and compressing pixels of the attenuation region based on the attenuation coefficients associated with the pixels. Preferably, the video frames are for display by a multi-screen projection system and the attenuation regions are in areas of overlap between adjacent projectors. The overlap regions ensure no gaps are present in the projection and the attenuation means the image is viewed with the correct brightness. Preferably the chroma or colour components are compressed more in regions with a greater amount of luma attenuation or dimming. Coding techniques may include subsampling or truncation of the data words. The invention also relates to a decompression method of processing encoded video frames to generate uncompressed video frames, and the corresponding apparatus.</p> |
