[Also in Division F2] A captive screw fastener comprises a retainer 18 having a linch formation 42 at one end, a bore 16 and a radially inwardly projecting flange 20; a screw 14 extending into the bore 16 and having a threaded part 36, a neck portion 44 and a head 38; and a locking element 56 which may be integral with the flange 20 and which prevents or restrains removal of the screw 14 from the retainer 18. As shown, the locking element 56 comprises a plastics ring which frictionally engages the wall of the bore 16 and which fits loosely around the neck portion 22 of the screw 14. Alternatively, the retainer bore may be so narrowed that the threaded portion 36 has a greater diameter than the narrowed portion or the narrowed portion may be threaded. A spring 50 may be provided to bias the screw head 38 away from the retainer 18. The fastener is anchored to a plate 12 by means of a punch 68 and co-operating anvil 64 which are so arranged on opposite sides of the plate and fastener and moved relative to each other that the screw head 38 is forced into engagement with the end face 40 of the retainer 18 which itself is then forced into the material about an aperture 60 of the plate 12.</p> |
