An endoscope apparatus 1 includes: an objective optical system 11 including a moving lens; a CCD 12 that picks up an image of an object via the objective optical system 11; a contour enhancement section 36 that performs contour enhancement of the image outputted from the CCD 12 and outputs contour component signals; a focusing evaluation section 40 that determines a focusing state by determining a signal distribution of the contour component signals; and an actuator drive section 42 that moves the moving lens to a focal position based on the focusing state. |
