The method includes doping into an electrolyte an intermetallid compound additive, the binding energy of which is higher than the binding energy of combinations generated at discharge of a secondary power source. The intermetallid may have the formula A(N-2)/2C(N+2)/2B8-N, where A is a metal, C is a metal or a metalloid and B is a metal or a metalloid, which is particularly effective for acid-lead batteries. In a further aspect, a compound of type ANB10-N, with A being a metal and B being a noble gas (e.g. ZnKr or CdAr), may be used as a dopant in the electrolyte. Such a dopant is particularly useful in lithium-ion and nickel-metal-hydride type batteries. Other examples of dopant disclosed include ZnGeN2, ZnSnAs2 and CuInS2. |
