The invention comprises compounds of the formula where p is 1 or 2, m and n are 0 or 1, the sum of m and n is at least 1, R is a phenyl radical, a saturated acyclic radical or an internally isolated ethenically unsaturated acyclic or cyclic radical, R<SP>1</SP> is a saturated mono- or bivalent acyclic radical, an internally isolated ethylenically unsaturated cyclic or acyclic monovalent radical, an internally isolated ethylenically unsaturated cyclic bivalent radical or an acetylenically unsaturated acyclic bivalent radical with the provisos that (1) R and R<SP>1</SP> are each hydrocarbon radicals of less than 20 carbon atoms, (2) when n is 0, R is an internally isolated ethylenically unsaturated cyclic radical, (3) when m is 0, R is a saturated acyclic radical and R<SP>1</SP> is an internally isolated ethylenically unsaturated monovalent cyclic radical, (4) when n is 0 and p is 1, R<SP>1</SP> is a saturated acyclic radical, (5) when p is 2 and n is 0, R<SP>1</SP> is bivalent cyclic and either saturated or acetylenically unsaturated and (6) at least one of R or R<SP>1</SP> is always a cycloalkene radical. The peresters may be prepared by reacting a hydroperoxide of a hydroxy alkane with a halide of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid. The diacyl peroxides may be prepared by reacting a peracid with an acid halide. |
