1,184,929. NPN compositions. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 9 May, 1968 [19 May, 1967], No. 23472/67. Heading A2B. Compositions containing non-protein nitrogen compounds for feeding ruminents include a water soluble salt of carboxymethyl cellulose, preferably sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, which may have been treated with citric acid to reduce its solubility, whereby the rate of dissolution of the NPN compound is substantially reduced and its utilisation by the animal is improved, without harmful effect. The preferred NPN compound is urea, but biuret, ammonium sulphate, or ammonium phosphate may also be employed. The composition may be prepared by pelletting a dry mixture of the constituents, or forming the mixture into a paste with water, preferably in the form of molasses, and extruding into pellets, or by coating particles with an aqueous solution of the carboxymethyl cellulose compound. The pellets may be coated with a waterproof polymeric material to retard the initial dissolution. Grain meal and spices may also be present. |
