<p>Bis-quaternary-ammonium sulphate salts are obtained by reacting a dialkyl sulphate ester and a trialkylamine at 50-400 DEG C. for 0.25 to 3 hours under sufficient pressure to prevent evaporation of said trialkylamine. The amine is generally employed in a stoichiometric excess and an inert solvent may be present. The reaction may be effected as a continuous process or it may be effected in two stages, i.e. in a first reaction stage at about 0-50 DEG C. in which the mono-quaternary ammonium salt is formed and a second stage at 50-400 DEG C. in which a second quaternary ammonium group is formed. Specified products are bis-tetramethyl-, bis-triethylmethyl-, bis-tetraethyl, bis-trimethyl-ethyl- and bis-tetrapropyl-ammonium sulphates. Trimethyl ammonium tetramethyl ammonium sulphate and tetramethyl ammonium methyl sulphate are also produced in examples in small quantities.</p> |
