An application layer protocol on a mobile device is configured to receive from an access layer network parameters of a current communication network and a second communication network. Depending upon the monitored parameters, the application layer protocol is able to open a second channel and connect to the second communication network. After the second connection is established, the mobile device may handover to the second communication network. To enable the handover between networks to appear seamless to a user (who may, for example, be conducting a video call) a transmission data rate may be adjusted and/or the delay time of a jitter buffer increased. The above may be used to hand over a video call between a cellular network and a WLAN (for example). |
