In apparatus for crinkling or crimping yarn according to the parent specification, the movable sinker elements 8 and the spaces between the sinker blocks 6 are inclined to face towards the direction from which cam means, as at 9, engage the elements. The movement of each element into a space is opposed and "overshoot" prevented by a device 10 comprising a sinker element-engaging cam in the form of a ball race 12 positioned and loaded by a spring 11 adjustable by rotation of a nut 13 screwing onto a cam-supporting rod 14. Yarn leaving the crimping head passes around a roller adjacent thereto, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) in order to isolate winding tension from crimping tension and to cool the yarn to a temperature at which the crimp is unaffected by the former tension.
