<p>A system for detecting abnormal movement in a gas turbine shaft comprises a frangible sensor element having proximal and distal ends, and a cutter or separator, coupled to or moveable with the shaft, to break or cut through the sensor element along a cutting line 15 towards its distal end, on axial movement of the shaft. The sensor element includes an electric circuit including an oscillator 32 connected to a load to form a first oscillator circuit, oscillatable at a first frequency. Movement of the cutter or separator along the cutting line forms a second oscillator circuit having a second load, different from the first load, such that it is oscillatable at a second frequency, different to the first frequency. Each load may comprise an inductance L1, L2 and a capacitance C1, C2. A frequency detector 31 may monitor the frequency of the oscillator.</p> |
