L-tryptophan is produced by aerobically culturing a histidine-requiring microorganism of the genus Corynebacterium, Athrobacter or Bacillus in an aqueous nutrient medium and accumulating the L-tryptophan in the resultant culture liquor. Specified microorganisms are Athrobacter paraffineus ATCC 21333, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 14662 and Corynebacterium glutamicum ATCC 21334.
