Novel steroids of the formula (wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> are each H, C 1-7 alkyl, alkanoyl or tetrahydropyranyl; X is H or C 1-7 alkyl; Y is H or CH 3 ; and Z is alkyl, Y and Z together containing not more than 3 carbon atoms) are prepared from the corresponding 17-ones and the appropriate 2- alkynyl metal compounds. Esters and ethers of the free ols are prepared by standard procedures. Cleavage of the 3-tetrahydropyranyl ethers gives the free 3-ols; similarly acylates may be hydrolysed. The dl-mixtures obtained in these processes may be resolved by standard techniques.
